EMILY | PIERCER - MELBOURNE CITY

How long have you been piercing?
I’ve been piercing for 10 years at studios all throughout Melbourne, although none like the Melbourne City Piercing Lab - it's incredible! It started when I was 19 and was approached by a group who told me I look like I'd be a good piercer. I now can't imagine doing anything else.

What is your favourite tip/trick?
Silk pillowcases are a great addition for healing piercings as silk is hydrophobic (water-repelling) which adds to their natural antibacterial properties, by inhibiting water and bacteria build-up. Although we don't want you sleeping on a new piercing, sometimes it happens anyway, so these are a great addition (works wonders for your hair and skin too).

What is your favourite part of the ear to pierce?
My favourite part of the ear to pierce is the rook. I think the jewellery looks so cute tucked away on the little shelf of your ear, and once completely healed a small ring looks stunning.

Any funny anecdotes or stories?
If in doubt, always listen to your piercer in regard to placement! I had a lovely girl who insisted she wanted her nose pierced quite far forward. I reluctantly accepted, and once the piercing was completed she agreed that it wasn't right! So we added another, which I suggested initially, and she left happy with a cute and unique double piercing as a result.

MARTA | SERVICES MANAGER -
PADDINGTON & MECCA FLAGSHIP

How long have you been piercing?
I have been piercing for a total of about 4 years now. I was very lucky to have a talented mentor, who I was able to shadow and watch before putting my knowledge into practice, and finally having a stab at it; performing piercings and changeovers.

I enjoy guiding a client through the piercing process, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to take their piercing smoothly through its healing journey.

For me, it is so important to never stop learning; I am always made aware of something new and am so appreciative of working with such a talented team of piercers who are a deep and fascinating knowledge pool.

What is your favourite tip/trick?
Piercings are actually quite interconnected with our bodies. Ensuring that we are in the best of health directly correlates to a smooth healing process.

Patience is key when it comes to healing, as piercings can take longer to heal than most people would expect.

I find that I seem to be a wild sleeper and am always waking up on my pierced ear, which is definitely not helpful for a smooth sailing healing journey! As a top tip, I like to nestle my pierced ear between two pillows to help alleviate any immediate pressure from my ear.

What is your favourite part of the ear to pierce?
Any instance where there is a perfect concoction of ideal anatomy to suit a particular style of jewellery makes my heart so happy.

I definitely favour our opal pieces, so any moment where I get the opportunity to find a spot where our Tiny Chroma Opal will sit perfectly on the ear is a dream come true.

Any funny anecdotes or stories?
A few years ago, a client asked me what the trick is to lining up ear lobe piercings to make them as even as possible. Instinctively, I answered "I just play it by ear" and that saying has become an undying repertoire during the markup process. It's a nonchalant response to what can be a painstaking measuring process.

JASON | PIERCER - PADDINGTON (SOON IN BRISBANE!)

How long have you been piercing?
Beginning my apprenticeship on the Gold Coast all the way back in 2012, I have been a professional body piercer for 10 years now.

What is your favourite tip?
Gloves make a world of difference, not only for hygiene reasons but for grip. For anyone at home trying to change their jewellery a pair of latex gloves will be your greatest asset.

What is your favourite part of the ear to pierce?
Ear flat and conch piercings are a favourite of mine. Having a large flat surface to work with gives us plenty of room to flex our creativity and create amazing combinations.

Any funny anecdotes or stories?
I will never get over the surprising response of "was that it?" when our clients realise that the piercing service is far quicker and less painful than they imagined.

CHARLOTTE | PIERCER - MELBOURNE CITY

How long have you been piercing?
I have been piercing for the better part of 5 years. I got into piercing when I was actually pursuing a tattoo apprenticeship. I have always had a passion for the body art industry, art and jewellery, and have a background in beauty, makeup and laser. I enjoy coming up with ideas on how to aesthetically adorn anatomy, creating endless possibilities and combinations. I moved to Melbourne in 2019 and after working for a piercing studio and then a tattoo studio, I found SARAH & SEBASTIAN. I absolutely love the opportunity to work with such special jewellery, and I am so excited to be working in our Melbourne Piercing Lab.

What is your favourite tip/trick?

I am a notorious side sleeper, so no matter how careful I am I often wake up laying on my piercings! A big no no! To assist with this, I like to place two pillows together so I can comfortably nestle my ear in between the two. This takes the pressure off ear piercings and allows me to sleep on my side.

What is your favourite part of the ear to pierce?
I absolutely love the conch, it gives so much freedom and often has space to showcase quite large pieces! I love hoops as well and enjoy piercing conches to eventually furnish with a large hoop, which will orbit around the outer cartilage. You can also do multiple piercings in the conch, and use different pieces to really create something special.

Any funny anecdotes or stories?
One of my favourite things is when I have a client who is new to piercing; I strive to make it a wonderful experience for them. I once had a client who was turning 98 and had never worn earrings. She decided that for her birthday it was time for her first piercing ever! It was an amazing experience for both of us, and seeing how excited she was with her new piercings is why I love my job.
