Introducing Our New Chadstone Home

We are proud to celebrate the opening of our new standalone store at Chadstone Shopping Centre. Designed in collaboration with architecture firm Richards Stanisich, the third store developed with the practice, it marks the first time at Chadstone that our full offering comes together under one roof. Fine jewellery collections meet our complete suite of services, from Ear Alchemy piercing and Soldered permanent jewellery to bridal consultations. Our dedication to ocean conservation has informed the organising idea behind the space, a store inspired by the interior life of an oyster. The build draws on upcycled and locally sourced materials, and digital screens showcase our archive of conservation films, an invitation to immerse yourself in some of Australia's most beautiful and fragile wild places. "OUR WORK WITHIN OCEAN CONSERVATION HAS BECOME SUCH A PIVOTAL PART OF THE BRAND... FOR CHADSTONE WE WANTED THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE TO BE INFORMED BY THIS IDEA." — SARAH & SEBASTIAN Co-Founder and Creative Director, Sarah Gittoes. An oyster builds its shell in layers, closing around a foreign grain until a pearl is formed. The Chadstone store is built the same way. Sand cast glass panels stagger across the facade, their edges left rough cut and flamed, while aged bronze signage sits against polished, orbital finished aluminium. Inside, crushed oyster shell, sourced from local Melbourne restaurants, has been worked into a sand toned render that runs the length of the walls. At the centre of the space, a custom terrazzo Weedy Seadragon set into the floor, hand drawn by Sarah Gittoes and inspired by her own experience underwater as a diver. Site specific and hand laid, the seadragon is the marine emblem of Victoria, found only in southern Australian waters. The private suite is lined in stained walnut burl and fitted with custom Volker Haug leopard lights, made locally in Melbourne. Brutalist cabinetry, framed in sand cast aluminium by Adelaide practice Saturday Yard Work, houses a selection of exceptional fine jewellery. Pearlescent finishes are threaded throughout, and marble accents echo the colouring found inside an oyster. In the Piercing Lab, muted lilac walls reference the iridescence known in a pearl as its orient. The ocean slows everything down, offering perspective between where he is and where he knows he can be. As Australia’s leading national charity dedicated solely to ocean conservation, AMCS has spent more than sixty years advocating for the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems and wildlife threatened by climate change, pollution, and destructive commercial fishing practices. Their work — grounded in science, education, and community action — continues to play a critical role in safeguarding the future of our oceans, making them a partner our team feels incredibly passionate about supporting. Most recently, we worked alongside AMCS on a campaign advocating for stronger nature laws in Australia, helping raise awareness around the urgent need for greater environmental protection and accountability. Earlier this year, our team also travelled to Far North Queensland alongside AMCS during the filming of a new documentary exploring the legacy of Ellison Reef — the reef that helped spark the creation of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Australian Marine Conservation Society itself. Witnessing firsthand the work being done by scientists, conservationists, Traditional Owners, and advocates to better understand the future of these fragile ecosystems was a powerful reminder of the importance of collective action and long-term environmental protection. Ocean conservation remains at the heart of SARAH & SEBASTIAN and The Xanthe Project. Artist Sarana Haeata on the World of Xanthe Zodiac

To celebrate the launch of XANTHE Zodiac; a celestial collection of pendants inspired by the astrology of the stars and the wisdom of the ocean, SARAH & SEBASTIAN has collaborated with Australian artist Sarana Haeata on a series of twelve original artworks. Based in Margaret River on the southwest coast of Australia, Haeata is known for her abstract figurative paintings exploring femininity, movement, motherhood, and shared human experience. Created in response to the sea creatures that symbolise each zodiac sign within the collection, the works bring an emotional and deeply intuitive layer to the storytelling behind XANTHE Zodiac. We visited Haeata at her studio, nestled amongst the lush countryside of Margaret River and shared alongside the workshop of her partner Tom Lee’s practice, Biscay Studio. Surrounded by nature, the space reflects the elemental energy present throughout her work. “In all of my paintings, there is a really strong sense of movement,” says Haeata. “The reason for this fluidity is a Māori term called the wairua. I love this idea of surrendering to this current, this force of life that we have.” This sense of surrender, motion, and calm became central to the visual language of the collaboration. "THE REASON FOR THIS FLUIDITY IS A MĀORI TERM CALLED THE WAIRUA. I LOVE THIS IDEA OF SURRENDERING TO THIS CURRENT, THIS FORCE OF LIFE THAT WE HAVE.” For each zodiac sign, Haeata created an original painting inspired by its corresponding sea creature using layered brushwork alongside 24-carat yellow gold and 12-carat white gold leaf. “Creating these creatures in this beautiful gold foil — I’m finding these ways to really give reverence to these sea creatures and how they relate to the descriptions that we know of our star signs,” she explains. Each artwork appears as a tarot-sized collectible card accompanying its corresponding pendant, featuring an original zodiac reading on the reverse designed to deepen the ritual and symbolism of the piece.[featured_images1] Alongside the collaboration, Haeata and Lee have also created a series of precision-engineered aluminium frames designed to house the original artworks. Designed and fabricated by Biscay Studio, the sculptural frames draw on brutalist forms and object design, transforming each work into a collectible piece for the home. “These are much more like an art sculpture in their own right,” says Haeata. “How a person interacts with that in a really intimate way in their home, I think that’s a really beautiful aspect to it.” The original artworks are now on display in select SARAH & SEBASTIAN boutiques and available to purchase online, with profits from the sale of the artworks supporting our Xanthe Project partners and the protection of fragile marine ecosystems. “HOW A PERSON INTERACTS WITH THAT IN A REALLY INTIMATE WAY IN THEIR HOME, I THINK THAT’S A REALLY BEAUTIFUL ASPECT TO IT”. Julia van Os on Motherhood, Love, and What Matters Most

For Mother’s Day 2026, SARAH & SEBASTIAN presents A Portrait of Her, a campaign featuring model Julia van Os, photographed by her partner Max Papendieck alongside their daughter Maia. This intimate series explores modern motherhood in its most natural form, revealing subtle connections between identity, legacy and design. Originally from Amsterdam, Julia now lives in New York with Max and their eight-month-old daughter. She moved to the city at eighteen to pursue modelling, a decision that quickly placed her on the international fashion circuit. From New York to London, Paris and Milan, fashion weeks exposed her to new cultures and perspectives, an experience that, as she reflects, “really shaped who I am.” Over time, New York became more than a place to work. It is where Julia met her husband Max, and where they are now raising their daughter together. Today, Julia introduces herself first as a mother. Modelling and art direction continue to shape her professional life, but motherhood has shifted her perspective in ways she did not anticipate. “Becoming a mum made me aware of a bigger purpose,” she says. “Someone else becomes more important. It is refreshing and grounding.” With that shift has come a new understanding of her own mother, and a deeper appreciation for everything motherhood holds. “BECOMING A MUM MADE ME AWARE OF A BIGGER PURPOSE.” During pregnancy, Julia began journaling as a way to process the experience. What started as a small habit soon became a personal chronicle of that time. She wrote throughout her pregnancy and into the months that followed, capturing thoughts and emotions as they unfolded. Looking back now, those pages offer a rare glimpse into her transition into motherhood. [featured_images1] Jewellery, she says, holds meaning in a similar way. Certain pieces gather significance over time. Her wedding ring remains the one she feels most connected to. “It signifies the life I built with my husband and now my daughter,” she explains, a symbol of the family they created together in a new country. “IT SIGNIFIES THE LIFE I BUILT WITH MY HUSBAND AND NOW MY DAUGHTER.” Another piece carries a different kind of history: a delicate gold chain given to her by her mother in law, once belonging to Max’s grandmother. For Julia, it represents the maternal line and the importance of passing something meaningful from one generation to the next. For now, motherhood shapes Julia’s world. As she puts it simply, “Motherhood is the centre of my life right now. Everything else revolves around that.” A portrait of her captures a moment within that chapter.

Ellison Reef: The Reef That Saved Them All

Imagery by Harriet Spark Earlier this year, ourGlobal Head of Brand, Matt Lennon, travelled to Far North Queensland alongside theAustralian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS), as documentary filmmakers Harriet Spark and Richard “Woody” Spark of Grumpy Turtle Films set out to capture the story of one of the most consequential reefs in Australia’s conservation history for their new film. In 1967, Ellison Reef became the unlikely battleground for a proposal to mine coral rubble. What followed would change the course of environmental protection in Australia. A small group of citizen scientists, artists and local advocates rallied to prove that the reef was alive and worth saving. Their efforts halted the mining proposal, sparked a national outcry and helped lead to the creation of the Australian Marine Conservation Society and the eventual establishment of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Ellison would come to be known as “the reef that saved all reefs.” “THE REEF THAT SAVED ALL REEFS.” Nearly sixty years later, a new generation has returned. Scientists, community divers, reef advocates and Mandubarra Sea Country rangers have revisited Ellison Reef to better understand how it has changed — and what it might reveal about the future of coral ecosystems as climate pressures intensify. During our visit, we joined the AMCS team on the reef as Harriet and Woody documented the resurvey and the people behind it. Through their lens, the film combines archival material, science, art and intimate underwater storytelling, reflecting on the legacy of the original Fight for the Reef campaign while bringing today’s urgency into clear view. Recently premiering as part of the Ocean Lovers film festival, Ellison: The Reef That Saved Them All is both a reflection on Australia’s conservation origins and a reminder that meaningful change often begins with committed individuals willing to speak up for the places that matter most. In Conversation: Jena Goldsack on Freediving, Ocean Conservation, and Sustainable Wetsuits

On a clear Sydney morning, we meet British freediver and ocean advocate Jena Goldsack at Little Bay Beach, a quiet cove framed by sandstone cliffs and calm water. Raised by the sea in Cornwall, Jena has always felt a deep connection to the ocean. From early memories of spotting dolphins on the horizon to becoming an ambassador for the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, her life has long been shaped by the water. Today, she channels that passion through freediving, ocean advocacy, and Fulmar, her sustainably led wetsuit brand. In conversation, Jena reflects on the meditative pull of life beneath the surface, the moments that have left her in awe, and why protecting our oceans has never been more important. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your connection to the ocean? What fuelled your journey into ocean conservation? I was born and raised at the back of a beach in Cornwall, UK. One of my first memories of living there was looking out of the living room and seeing dolphins on the horizon. We took school trips and weekend trips to the local Seal sanctuary which rescues & rehabilitates injured seals, then if they can, release them back to the wild. Sometimes a seal will have such a bad injury they will end up being a resident here - there was one seal called Ray that had brain damage from a boat accident who happily lived there for 20+ years until he passed away! When I wanted to get more into charity work, I knew the Cornish Seal Sanctuary would be a great fit for me and I’m still an ambassador for them now. What do you love most about freediving? I had been a scuba diver for years before I started freediving and I didn’t get the appeal, but once I tried, as every Freediver will tell you, you genuinely just feel more free and natural with the water, like you’re meant to be there. Animals aren’t afraid to come near you because you’re not breathing any scary bubbles, and I think it’s amazing what our bodies are capable of, even when we think they aren’t. “YOU GENUINELY JUST FEEL MORE FREE AND NATURAL WITH THE WATER, LIKE YOU’RE MEANT TO BE THERE.” What’s your favourite place in the world to go diving? I think so far it’s been the Maldives as the water is just so so pristine. My dive friends call me a fair weathered diver and I’m not ashamed of it! I struggle holding my breath in cold water as I can’t relax. I originally learnt in the Cayman Islands and unfortunately I think that has tainted me to warm clear waters forever! What does being underwater teach you that you can’t learn on land? Something you don’t really get on land as much is that you can completely switch off, absolutely nothing is going on in my brain apart from being in the moment, it’s like a fine tuned meditation only a few people can seem to achieve on land. The only thing you are thinking about / appreciating is the water, your surroundings and feeling at complete peace. “THE ONLY THING YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT IS THE WATER, YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND FEELING AT COMPLETE PEACE.” [featured_images1] What inspired you to create Fulmar, and how does the brand reflect your values and connection to the ocean? I’m not going to pretend it has been a life long dream to have a wetsuit line! But it’s been a very natural progression. I suffer from eczema and every dive rental shop wetsuit would make my skin irritated. So I started looking for hypoallergenic wetsuit brands and there are a few great brands that already exist that use limestone neoprene, which is designed to be skin friendly, but I couldn’t find the perfect fit for myself as well as the right thickness (I get cold very easily!). There seemed to be a gap in the UK market for female specific wetsuit brands as the majority are made for men’s bodies, so I ended up creating some samples and it went from there. I wanted to create in small batches as to not waste any more product than I need - I wanted to keep the colours as earthy or oceany as possible and I aimed for only a few sizes at first to see what would sell best - and we are adding another couple of sizes in the next couple of months after some interest and feedback. We also had some leftover fabric from our blue steamer suit so we turned that into headbands so nothing would go to waste. Has there been a moment in the ocean that truly left you in awe? Two moments! One was after we had been diving with tiger sharks in the Maldives, we went out into deeper water and ended up around a pop of 1-2 thousand Mellon headed whales and dolphins - they were quite timid at first but we ended up spending hours swimming with them and the way they look you in the eye as if to say ‘wha are you doing here human?’. The second time was recently in French Polynesia, it was a tough day on the water as it was so rough and I haven’t had sea sickness since I was a child but I quickly lifted my head out of the water to try and throw up, and when I put my head back under, a humpback whale was about a meter away from me! I watched this thing come at me like a giant submarine and then turn away last minute, and again, when it’s eye catches yours you are truly in awe of the sheer size and elegance of this being. If you could leave people with one powerful message to inspire greater care and protection for our oceans, what would it be? I take a lot of inspiration from Sylvia Earle, one of my favourite ocean women - the world’s first female aquanaut! And who Fulmar’s steamer suit is named after - and something powerful she has said before is ‘No water, no life. No blue, no green’ - I think we can all appreciate that these are very calming colours and take you to a place of ease even when just thinking about them, so why wouldn’t you want these to exist? “NO WATER, NO LIFE. NO BLUE, NO GREEN.” [featured_images2] What’s on the horizon for you? Are there any projects or collaborations you’re especially excited about? Something I’m excited about for fulmar is that we have a new surf vest coming out in the next two months! This will be made from Yulex, a natural rubber, so it’s the most sustainable form of wetsuit we can offer. We are adding this in more sizes, and it’s a beautiful orange colour so I have named the colour Bondi Sunset, as I showed it first at our Sydney launch during the most beautiful of end summer sunset.

Take 3 For The Sea: Protecting What Is Precious

The ocean remains a defining influence on SARAH & SEBASTIAN’s design ethos. Its movement, depth and raw beauty continue to inspire our work while reinforcing our responsibility to protect it. In 2022, we launched our philanthropic initiative, The Xanthe Project™, a long term commitment to safeguarding the marine environments that shape our designs. Through partnerships, education and direct action, the initiative supports organisations working to protect the future of our oceans. Yet the scale of the challenge continues to grow. Each year, millions of tonnes of plastic enter the ocean, travelling through streets, drains and waterways before reaching the sea. What disappears from view rarely disappears at all. Over time, plastic breaks down into microplastics that spread through ecosystems and threaten marine life. The SARAH & SEBASTIAN team gathered at Coogee Beach alongside our partner Take 3 For The Sea. More than 40 volunteers came together for a morning of education and collective action. At first glance, the coastline appeared pristine. But the closer we looked, the more we found. Fragments of plastic caught between rocks. Cigarette butts pressed into the sand. Foam packaging scattered through the grass along the foreshore. In just over an hour, our team removed 5,486 pieces of waste, totalling 17.5 kilograms of debris. Among them were 2,379 cigarette butts, alongside hundreds of plastic fragments and pieces of foam insulation. Unexpected finds included an air mattress, nicotine pouches and SIM cards, fragments of everyday life that had washed ashore. Beaches like Coogee are cleaned regularly by local councils, yet much of this debris remains hidden in plain sight. Many pieces were partially buried in the sand or tangled within coastal vegetation. Others had already broken down into smaller fragments, almost invisible at first glance. Plastic rarely disappears. Instead, it breaks apart, becoming smaller and more widespread over time. These particles are often mistaken for food by marine animals, causing lasting harm within marine ecosystems. Moments like this reveal how easily everyday waste finds its way to the ocean. Through The Xanthe Project™, SARAH & SEBASTIAN continues to support initiatives that protect and restore marine environments. Captured in our Sydney studio, The Making of OVERTONE traces the design journey behind our new South Sea Pearl collection. In this short film, Co-founder and Creative Director Sarah Gittoes reflects on the inspiration and creative process that shape OVERTONE. The collection begins with the interior life of the oyster, a living system that draws in water, circulates nutrients, and establishes the delicate equilibrium required for a pearl to form. By definition, overtone refers to the delicate secondary colours that appear within a pearl as it catches the light. Beyond its primary tone, subtle notes of blush, silver, or rose gently emerge and shift across the surface, revealing the pearl’s depth, dimension, and natural complexity. The film also reveals how each design is shaped around the pearl, conceived in direct response to its unique contour and character. Set against coral beaches, nostalgic architecture and crystalline water, SARAH & SEBASTIAN on Holiday was inspired by the art of the vacation – a reflection on leisure, ritual and the pastimes that keep us occupied on idyllic island days. We captured moments across a series of dreamy locations, hit the tennis courts for a rally, and submerged ourselves in one of the largest lagoon pools in the Southern Hemisphere.
